- Abstract
Objective: This is a case report to discuss regarding the rarity of lipoma arising from parotid gland. We are also highlighting the importance of imaging as diagnostic tool and surgical management in our centre. Design: Retrospective case note analysis and follow up of the case. Materials and Methods: Review of the patient's case note, follow up photos and investigation result was made. Results: A patient presented with 3 years history of slow progressive painless right parotid gland swelling measuring 3.0 cm X 3.0 cm, which clinically suggestive of a benign lesion likely a Warthin's tumour. The lesion was surgically excised and noted to be clinically intraparotid lipomatous lesion. Histopathology study revealed it to be a lipoma. Conclusion: Intraparotid lipoma is a rare benign parotid tumour which is best to diagnose retrospectively before proper surgical management is planned. Clinical diagnostic approach alone might not be sufficient while FNAC was noticeably less accurate. Advanced diagnostic imaging has the potential to play a key role in obtaining accurate pre operative diagnosis. Surgical approaches open to superficial parotidectomy or extracapsular dissection (enucleation) depending on tumour size, tumour location and its relation to parotid gland to achieve complete tumour resection and facial nerve preservation. The incidence of tumour recurrence is rare.
