- Authors
MORRIS, LESLEY R.
- Abstract
The article reports on the California Trail and overland emigration through the use of emigrant diaries. The impact of overland emigration on the land in California, specifically the City of Rocks, is discussed during the period of 1849-1860. The California Trail saw an estimated 200,000 people and 90,000 draft animals emigrating around the City of Rocks area. 79 emigrant diaries made during the time of emigrant travel as well as afterwards were collected and studied in order to determine the impact of travel upon the land in California. It was found that the water described during travel was adequate while afterward much if it was dried up.
