- Abstract
Despite his philosophical and theological formation Joseph Braun S.J. (1857-1947) participated significantly in two research areas in the history of art: he wrote fundamental works on the history of material culture and, despite initial reservations, he was one of the pioneering researchers of the German baroque. The equating of the baroque style with the 'Jesuit style', which was often the basis for a polemic against the Society of Jesus, could have inspired Braun to choose this field. His interest in the stylistically multi-faceted material legacy of his religious order was possibly at first apologetic: the defense of the Society of Jesus against the charge of visual 'imperialism'.
