- Abstract
Devotion to the saints was one of the most important political practices in the Kingdom of Naples during the reign of Charles of Bourbon (1734-1759). This praxis sought to deal with the initial emergencies that the Crown had to face once the military conquest of Naples and Sicily by the new Spanish sovereign had been completed. Thus, in order to analyse this problematic, it will be necessary to start from several points. Firstly, the construction of the new Neapolitan Monarchy under the Bourbon sovereign (secretaries of State, royal courts, feudal practices and the Banco di San Carlo); secondly, the new dynamics of these confessional uses for the city of Naples and the whole kingdom (old and new cults and the emergence of the Military Order of San Gennaro); and, finally, the generalised ascription of all Spanish subjects to the Congregation of the Immaculate Conception, intended exclusively for the "cavalieri spagnoli".
