- Abstract
Introduction: This study evaluates the management of renal calculi over a 10 year period (1997-2007) and illustrates the changing trends towards endoscopic management in our institution. Materials and Methods: 1900 patients with renal calculi were treated from 1997 -- 2007 in our institution. All patients underwent blood and urine investigations along with X-ray KUB + USG KUB. IVP was done in all patients with normal renal parameters and CT KUB / Isotope Renogram in selected patients. Management modalities included Anatrophic Nephrolithotomy, Pyelolithotomy, ESWL and PCNL. Observation: In this 10 year period, there is a steady shifts noted from open surgical procedures and ESWL which predominated in the earlier period of study, towards endoscopic procedures i.e. in the recent years. 1997: ESWL -- 101; Open -59; PCNL -- 30; 2006: ESWL -- 12 ; Open -- 4; PCNL -- 270. This is contributed by several factors - increased endoscopic skills, patient preference, less intensive follow up, good stone clearance and decreased hospital stay. Conclusion: The study reflects the experience in our institution over the last 10 years and illustrates the changing trends in the management of renal calculi towards endoscopic treatment modalities with very good stone clearance rates and much shorter hospital stay.
