- Abstract
Introduction: The creation of a tracheostomy is a critical event with complex and multidimensional effects on a person's life. The development of self-care competencies in tracheostomy ostomy patients is recognized as one of the most significant areas sensitive to nursing care for regaining autonomy and adaptation. Identifying nursing interventions for the promotion of self-care in the person awaiting tracheostomy or who has undergone tracheostomy will improve knowledge about current practice. Objective: This paper presents the protocol used for a scoping review of the literature aimed to map nursing interventions used to promote tracheostomy self-care. Methods: This scoping review will consider studies with people aged 18 years older waiting for tracheostomy or who have already undergone tracheostomy with the potential for regaining autonomy, regardless of their clinical indication, technique, or duration. Published studies and unpublished papers that focus on nursing interventions to promote tracheostomy self-care will be included. All care settings will be considered. The Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) methodology for scoping review will be used. A search will be conducted in databases: CINAHL Complete, Scopus, Web of Science, PubMed, JBI Database of Systematic Reviews and Implementation Reports, and Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews. The search for grey literature will include the Open Access Scientific Repository of Portugal, Open Grey, and ProQuest Dissertations and Theses. Studies published in Portuguese, Spanish, English, and French languages will be considered. The study selection and data extraction will be performed by two independent reviewers. Conclusion: The results of this scoping review (to be presented later in a separate paper) will summarize and identify the interventions available for nurses to use in their practice. Additionally, the authors will identify gaps and make recommendations for further research
