- Abstract
New possibilities to improve the quality of colour reproduction have arisen with the development in advanced colourimetry. One of such possibilities is the colour appearance model CIECAM02, which uses the influence of surroundings to estimate the appearance of a stimulus. The aim of this research was to investigate how to prepare gamut mapping algorithms with a successful use of the colour appearance model CIECAM02 and to establish whether the gamut mapping with the CIECAM02 model gives better results than the gamut mapping without the colour appearance model, e.g. in the CIELAB colour space. The gamut mapping algorithms in the CIELAB colour space and with the CIECAM02 colour appearance model were prepared as functions in Octave, with an extra step which maps all colours to the destination gamut. The gamut mapping algorithms were applied for twenty colour patches on the mapping between the Adobe RGB and sRGB colour space and on the mapping between the Wide Gamut RGB and sRGB colour space. All gamut mapping was conducted successfully, since all colours were mapped into the destination colour space. The lowest average colour differences between the original and mapped colours were calculated for the CIECAM02 gamut mapping algorithm for the gamut mapping between the Adobe RGB and sRGB colour space. The gamut mapping algorithms were also tested when changing background, better matching between the original test colour patches and mapped test colour patches being given by the CIECAM02 gamut mapping algorithm. Generally, gamut with CIECAM02 delivered better results than the algorithm in the CIELAB colour space.
