- Abstract
The analysis of the discourse and the fictional world of fantastic Spanish microfiction of the twentieth century reveals a general silencing of the female voice, evident both in the limited spaces she occupies and in the peripheral roles she plays. This paper focuses on the processes of visibilization of women that seem to unveil themselves in the Spanish microstories written by female writers (and by male writers who subvert the construction of gender in some of their creations). Firstly, I study the way in which fictional women expand spaces and functions, claiming their role in the stories as patient and agent subjects of the fantastic phenomenon, and making them the narrators of their own stories. Secondly, I examine the values of the resurgence of the image of the 'praying mantis' woman, or devouring woman, who becomes –emancipated– one of the most emblematic fantastic monsters of postmodernity.
