- Authors
Barton, John Cyril
- Abstract
A literary criticism is presented examining the ways in which the book "The Marrow of Tradition" by political activist Charles W. Chestnutt depicted the widespread use of lynching, often perpetrated against African Americans, in the U.S. Chestnutt was deeply averse to mob violence in the work, and approached the subject through the use of irony and sarcasm. Chestnutt's relationship with the Ohio anti-lynching campaign and support for anti-lynching legislation are also explored.
