- Authors
Bauer, Eurydice Bouchereau; Arazi, Juliana
- Abstract
The article discusses instructional methods that promote literacy development in immigrant students, English learners (EL), and second-language (L2) learners. The authors examine the role of literacy and vocabulary instruction in the reading comprehension levels of ELs. They discuss ways to make texts in English more comprehensible for ELs, including the techniques of previewing and creating bilingual dictionaries that support the meanings of words used in classroom texts. The article describes the experiences of one of the authors, who helped an elementary EL student create a summary of the story "Jack and the Beanstalk" by discussing vocabulary words, helping the student write short sentences, and participating in guided reading instruction.
