- Title
Ambrose Philips and Little Preston.
- Authors
Considine, John
- Abstract
The author considers the attribution of the 18th century English mock heroic poem "Little Preston" to author Ambrose Philips. The attribution is based on criticism of the proposed book "Compleat and Standard Dictionary of the Whole English Language," which was attributed to Philips by George Briton, which may have been a pseudonym of someone working at the University of Oxford. Philips' known works such as the poems "Epistle to the Honourable James Craggs," "To the Right Honourable Robert Walpole," and an ode to Queen Anne are compared with "Preston."
