- Title
DATING KING JOHN: THE IMPLICATIONS OF THE INFLUENCE OF EDMUND SPENSER'S RUINS OF ROME ON SHAKESPEARE'S TEST.
- Authors
Hieatt, Charles W.
- Abstract
The article reports that the majority view that William Shakespeare's King John was written in 1594-6, well after the publication of the anonymous Troublesome Reign of King John in 1591, is supported by Eric Sam's claim that Shakespeare wrote both plays. This claim denies the minority view that King John was written a year or so before Troublesome Reign. A newly discovered influence on King John supplies the required evidence, enabling one to show that it was indeed the later work while at the same time indicating a more precise date for the play than offered heretofore.
