- Authors
Bragg, Don C.
- Abstract
The article discusses baldcypress (Taxodium distichum) lumbering in the Mississippi Delta region in east Arkansas, focusing on the antebellum era. The region's transformation from dense forests of baldcypress trees and swamps into fields of cotton, rice, corn and soybeans is presented. Particular focus is given to the lumbering of baldcypress timber for use in roof shingles, water tanks, caskets, boats, furniture, sugar crates and construction material. The U.S. federal government's legislation concerning cypress lumbering during the Antebellum period, including the Swamp Land Act and the Preemption Act of 1841, is also presented.
