- Abstract
The article presents a study which investigates the survival and growth of hardwoods in weathered brown and in unweathered gray sandstone on a surface mine operated by Catenary Coal Co. in Kanawha County, West Virginia. It mentions the use of a two-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) to identify the differences among the types and compaction of topsoil. Results showed substantial differences of tree survival in topsoil but not with the compaction treatment. It notes that the presence of phosphorus in unweathered gray stone may contribute to the growth and development of roots.
