- Abstract
The relation between low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) and coronary artery disease has been established in many observational epidemiologic studies and in numerous clinical trials of lipidlowering interventions. The recent development of the direct homogeneous assays for LDL-C determination represents therefore an important practical advance in laboratory testing, providing a superior method to confidently diagnose, classify, and treat patients according to national and international recommendations based on LDL-C values in patients at risk. It is hoped that the availability of such a test will encourage more physicians to screen, detect, and treat high concentrations of LDL-C in the population, thereby significantly reducing the risk of coronary disease.
