- Abstract
The article presents a study which identified the important growth factors for the morphogenesis of the ocular surface. Growth factors such as hepatocyte, fibroblast growth factor (FGF-7), keratocyte growth factor (KGF), epidermal growth factor (EGF), tumor necrosis factor and transforming growth factor (TGF) are characterized as autocrine or paracrine mediators of stromal-epithelial interactions and are important for the maintenance of corneal cell functions. Illustrations showing corneas with defects are presented.
