- Abstract
With respect to the problem of tuberculosis in western Canada's residential schools, the first decades of the twentieth century were characterized by a policy of neglect on the part of the Canadian government. Additional resources became available beginning in the late 1930s, and an early experiment to address this issue was the Fort Alexander Preventorium in southeastern Manitoba. This article documents the brief history of this forgotten institution, and establishes its place within the history of Aboriginal tuberculosis treatment. Despite its brief existence, the preventorium paved the way for an enhanced system of treatment facilities that contributed to the rapid decline of the disease.
