- Title
"MAKE US ONE WITH CHRIST": ESSAY ON THE ANGLICAN-METHODIST DIALOGUE.
- Authors
Hughes, Richard A.
- Abstract
The author reviews the reports of the current ecumenical discussions between Episcopalians and Methodists and offers a critical examination of the definitive 2010 document, A Theological Foundation for Full Communion between The Episcopal Church and The United Methodist Church. He supplements that document by explaining the historical dynamics of common worship between Anglicans and Methodists, then analyzes the respective doctrines of justification in the theologies of Thomas Cranmer and John Wesley, since they are omitted in A Theological Foundation. The essay culminates in a discussion of Holy Communion in the Anglican and Wesleyan traditions and comments on the controversial issues of communion elements and open communion. It concludes by identifying The Book of Common Prayer and the hymns of Charles Wesley as the mutual foundation of Anglican-Methodist union.
