- Abstract
The article discusses the Société des Arts, an organization active in Paris, France during the early 18th century which was devoted to the improvement of the useful arts and the dissemination of related knowledge. Particular focus is given to the the organization's historiography. The authors challenge previous historians' treatment of science and the arts, savants and artisans, and theory and practice as binary opposites. Other topics include expertise and epistemology.
