- Abstract
The article focuses on a public health investigation by the North Dakota Department of Health into a stray dog that had been found to have rabies. To identify possible human and animal contacts of the dog, animal shelter records and public notification was used. A total of 21 persons who might have been exposed to the rabid dog have received post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP). Twenty five dogs in the shelter with the rabid dog were also euthanized in accordance with Compendium of Animal Rabies Prevention and Control guidance. To protect against rabies and the resulting public health consequences, vaccination and animal control programs are recommended.
