- Abstract
The article focuses on the ceremonial costumes used by the Minangkabau society in Nagari Koto nan Gadang, a village in Sumatra, Indonesia as a way of expressing kin relationships. It mentions the cultural practices of the Minangkabau which is a matrilineal organised society with Islam as its faith. It discusses how the ceremonial costumes used by the Minangkabau act as active symbols of abstract relationships between social groups such as affinal groups and help in reinforcing the identity of individuals and groups in the community. It discusses the introduction of Islam to villagers, the Dutch occupation, and the Minangkabau kinship system. It also discusses affinal relations in the Minangkabau society, ceremonial costumes for men and women, and their use in various events.
