- Abstract
Translation activity is a valuable process in regard to the transfer of the culture to next generations and the transfer to different literatures. Especially in case of a very significant work of a certain scholar, the translation process is expected to be carried out in a healthier manner and in more accordance with the standards. At the beginning of these standards, various academic measures such as staying with the original script, investigating the meaning of domain-specific terms, avoiding the mistakes in the writing of private names, adequately reflecting the style of the author to the reader and referring the related sources in the references are followed. This article focuses on the Turkish translations of et-Tarîkatü’l- Muhammediyye written in Arabic by Birgivî Mehmed Efendi (981/1573), one of the most important scholar and muhaddith of Ottoman Empire period. The masterpiece has been a source of inspiration for some intellectual and social movements, and it has been used in education as a textbook for centuries. Thousands of manuscripts of the work are available in Süleymaniye Manuscripts Library and Anatolia. Tarîka, closely related to several branches such as Hadith, Sufism, Arabic Language, Tafser, Fiqh and Kalam, had been translated into Turkish many times in the Republic Period. The first translation was carried out by retired mufti Celal Yıldırım. Including the work of Celal Yıldırım, the success of these translations has not been discussed sufficiently. Criticism of the mistakes in translation will be carried out under three main headings; “Language problems”, “Text Problems” and “Lack of Scientific Sensitivity Problems”. These titles are also detailed in themselves. The subject is evaluated with the help of 17 instances proffered in both Arabic and Turkish, and this evaluation is made according to the two separate edition analyzed prints in Konya and Aleppo.
