An essay is presented on the history of the French Communist Party (PCF) books and publishing. It states that the PCF was created after a split within the Socialist Party (SP) in December 1920. The split resulted in the division of SP property, part of which was the Librairie de l'Humanité, a publishing house. The Librairie de l'Humanité was inherited by the French Communists at the end of the Congress of Tours.
