- Abstract
The monastery of Nuestra Señora de Atocha in Mac rid, a royal foundation, was completed around 1630. Philip IV rebuilt the chapel of the Virgin in 1662 to designs by Sebastián de Herrera Barnuevo, the maestro mayor (chief architect) of royal works. An architectural reconstruction of the church, an 18lh-century painting and an engraving in the Re il Academia de San Fernando allow the appearance of the altarpiece designed for the chapel to be known. A connection is also made between an anonymous drawing in the Biblioteca Nacional de España and Herrera Barnuevo's project. Finally, it has been possible to identify the exact destination of two decorative designs by the artist now in the Uffizi.
