- Title
THE EFFECT OF ALEX HALEY'S ROOTS ON HOW GAMBIANS REMEMBER THE ATLANTIC SLAVE TRADE.
- Authors
Wright, Donald R.
- Abstract
The article traces the influence of Alex Haley's book "Roots" on Gambians' portrayal of the Gambia-River slave trade in oral traditions. The lack of historical accuracy in Haley's book and its marketing as nonfiction are discussed, and various monuments and recognitions of events depicted in "Roots" by the government of Gambia are described. The author recounts a guided tour of the village of Juffure and discusses the impact of increased tourism in the wake of "Roots" on Gambians' representations of their history.
