- Abstract
This article aimed to evaluate the degree of knowledge and adherence to self-care of individuals with type 2 diabetes mellitus. It is an exploratory, quantitative study with 176 individuals with diabetes assisted in primary health care and selected by non-probability sampling. The Brazilian version of the Diabetes Mellitus Knowledge (DKN-A) and Diabetes Self-Care (PAF) questionnaires was used. Data analysis used descriptive statistics through measures of central tendency and dispersion and bivariate analysis used Pearson's chi-square or Fisher's exact tests. It was observed that the respondents have knowledge about diabetes, being influenced by age and income. In self-care activities, greater adherence was to the use of medication and the lower was glucose monitoring. It was concluded that the knowledge was not translated into self-care practice, requiring the strengthening of educational programs with active methodologies.
