CAUSAL COMPLEXITY IN ENTREPRENEURSHIP.

- Abstract
Is the inherent causal complexity of entrepreneurial phenomena adequately captured by quantitative entrepreneurship research? We contrast two causal mechanisms to make a case for more methodological plurality and better theory-method compatibility in entrepreneurship. We discuss an underexplored type of causality that suggests the "possibility" of an outcome. We call such necessary conditions a license-to-play. By contrast, we call more commonly evidenced "probability" raising causal arguments (more X causes more Y) a license-to-win. Using founder's experience, we show that a condition can be both license-to-play and win based on different outcomes. Thus, we shed light on the complexity of entrepreneurial phenomena.
