The article discusses fibromyalgia (FM). It notes that the FM syndrome used to be called fibrositis yet was changed to its current name to address the presence of pain. Factors that contribute to the development of FM are given which include genetic predisposition to the syndrome, environmental triggers such as trauma and stressors and psychological factors including depression and anxiety. It examines the pain mechanisms of the syndrome in which central pain pathways tend to exhibit dysregulation.
