- Title
How Ecuador Shredded Norms Around Asylum and Refugees.
- Authors
DORFMAN, ARIEL
- Abstract
The article discusses the recent arrest of former vice president Jorge Glas in the Mexican Embassy in Quito, Ecuador, despite his diplomatic asylum. The author reflects on their own experience seeking refuge in an embassy during the Pinochet dictatorship in Chile and emphasizes the historical importance of embassies as inviolable refuges. They highlight the institutionalized refugee protections established in the 20th century and express concern over Ecuador's violation of these norms, which has led to diplomatic consequences. The author argues that upholding international norms that protect the vulnerable is crucial and calls for accountability for Ecuador's actions.
