- Abstract
During operation, hot combustion products are passed through the inner casing from combustion chamber to gas turbine. Therefore, this part is exposed to high temperatures and is subjected to various damage mechanisms such as creep, oxidation, corrosion, erosion and thermal fatigue. An investigation was conducted on the inner casing of a V94.2 gas turbine which exhibited extensive cracks after a short operational period. Microstructure observations and mechanical tests were performed to assess the cause of crack formation. The results indicate that a significant temperature increase during combustion led to the formation of atomic nitrogen which promoted the formation of nitrite components and formation of parallel sets of fine cracks. In addition, thermal fatigue due to a high number of startups and shutdowns of the turbine contributed to the formation of cracks.
