- Abstract
Objective: To explore the relationship between social participation, self-management, social cohesion and health among elderly people in central and western parts of China. Methods:Based on the data of China General Social Survey in 2017, the Ordinal Logit nested model and KHB decomposition method were used to examine the effects and mechanisms of informal participation and formal participation on health among elderly people in central and western parts of China. Results:Informal participation and formal participation had significant positive effects on health among elderly people in central and western parts of China, and the effect was more obvious in male and married elderly people. Self-management and social cohesion were mediating variables of mechanism of social participation, but their mechanisms were different in dimension and structure. The mediating effect of self-management was significant in men, while the mediating effect of social cohesion was significant in women. The mediating effect of self-management was significant in both married and unmarried groups, while the mediating effect of social cohesion was significant in married groups. Conclusions:Policies should be implemented and government departments and medical care force should be mobilized to guide the social participation of the elderly people in central and western parts of China, so as to improve their health level.
