- Abstract
The article discusses the founding of West Tennessee College. The college started out as Jackson Male Academy. The academy was located in Jackson, Tennessee and was founded in 1823. Since the citizens of Jackson desired a collegiate school for its male students it chartered West Tennessee College in 1844. The college served the town until 1875, at which time West Tennessee College merged with Union University Murfreesboro that formed Southwestern Baptist University (SWBU) at Jackson. SWBU was renamed Union University in 1907.
