- Title
'Talking Back': The Danger of Silence and the Risk of Speaking in Black and White.
- Authors
White, Shauntae Brown
- Abstract
The author discusses the challenges she faced in the classroom as an African-American teacher and scholar. She cites her first tenure-track position where she came to understand the intricacies of race and gender and their influence on student perceptions when white males challenged her authority and credibility or were disrespectful. While she can manage incidents of the whites being disrespectful, she cannot control her teaching evaluations which are considered during tenure and promotion (T&P). She indicates that unless there is institutional transformation, survival for her is a form of resistance and cites the need to document and share her experiences to inform others.
