The article explores the use of the Old English and Medieval Latin trope “ubi sunt qui ante nos fuerunt” (where are those who were before us," focusing particularly on how it exemplifies a sense of history, in three Victorian poems: “Childe Roland to the Dark Tower Came” by Robert Browning; "Dover Beach" by Matthew Arnold, as well as Arnold's "Memorial Verses."
