- Abstract
The article discusses the villanelle as a poetic form that became popular among English poets during the 19th century and the work of poet and essayist Edmund Gosse to promote its use. The history of the villanelle is traced, including its French and Italian origins in the 1500s and the villanelles of Jean Passerat and Wilhelm Ténint, who had a particular influence on Gosse. The poem "Villanelle de Buloz" by Théodore de Banville is analyzed.
