- Abstract
The article presents an exploration into the works of the 19th-century English poet Algernon Charles Swinburne in relation to the social ideology of "cosmopolitan republicanism" of the 1860s. Details are given defining the feature characteristics of the movement, including representative government and the balance of the individual's well-being versus that of the larger community. Examples of Swinburne's philosophy within his poetry and his role as a public moralist are discussed in-depth.
