- Title
SPORT: THE METER STICK OF THE CIVIL WAR SOLDIER.
- Authors
Fielding, Lawrence W.
- Abstract
This article discusses the sporting heritage of U.S. Civil War soldiers. The author examines the link between the concepts of heroism, courage, and manhood in both sports and in war. The sporting lives of war figures such as Andrew Jackson and Daniel Boone are also presented as examples of war heroes who participated in sports. In both Northern and Southern United States during the U.S. Civil War, sports were viewed as valuable training for soldiers and as an outlet for exercise as well. Nonparticipants in sports were actually seen as suspicious characters during the U.S. Civil War. Sports were a measure of worth among soldiers during the U.S. Civil War.
