- Title
"TO THROTTLE THE HYDRA": THE MIDDLE CLASS AND RUGBY'S GREAT SCHISM.
- Abstract
This article looks at the Great Schism that took place in 1895 when 22 rugby clubs seceded from the Rugby Football Union (RFU) and set up their own confederacy. Some have speculated that the schism was the result of the RFU having become a working class organization, but a closer look shows that this assumption is not accurate and that it appears that the entrepreneurial middle class members took the opportunity to direct the game to their own benefit for profit and prestige.
