- Abstract
The article discusses late-18th century representations of the Ruthenian peasantry as savage from the nobility of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth and their relationship to wider European understandings of ethnicity. The author explains the Commonwealth's Ruthenian palatinates' identity as borderlands, and outlines the connection between noble imagery regarding the low status of peasants and their perceived penchant for uprisings, with particular focus given to representations of Zaporozhian Cossacks. Savagery was connected to such elements of Zaporozhian culture as a nomadic lifestyle and different food ways.
