The article presents discussion of the developments within the intellectual elites of Poland during the second half of the 20th century. The drastic cultural and political shifts which occurred after the failure of the January 1863 Uprising are reviewed, highlighting different regimes of varying cultural autonomy and repression in within the separated partitions of the former state. Contrasts are particularly drawn between the Austrian and Russian treatments of the Polish intelligentsia. Additional social changes are discussed, including the decreasing wealth of the gentry and the emancipation of Jews and women in Polish life. Conclusions are given stressing the development of strong nationalistic identity throughout the Polish lands during the era.
