- Title
The Picaresque According to Cervantes.
- Authors
Gasta, Chad M.
- Abstract
A literary criticism of the book "Don Quixote," by Miguel de Cervantes is presented. It states that the picaresque is antagonistic to the idealistic chivalric, pastoral, and sentimental romances that were popular with readers. The author says the novels "Lazarillo de Tormes" and "Guzmán de Alfarache" were the foundation for the picaresque. Hispanists commonly consider works produced in the genre after 1646 as picaresque imitations of the more canonical works, often in the form of parody or satire.
