- Abstract
This essay explores headnotes and footnotes within editions of the "Norton Anthology of English Literature," focusing on the topic of Christians and adversaries. Examples are given of literary adversarial characters such as depictions of Satan, historical adversaries such as the Islamic Empire, and spiritual adversity such as internal struggle. Discussion is then given noting how the anthology shows increasingly tolerant language towards the adversaries over its publication history.
