- Abstract
An essay is presented on depictions of drinking and drunkenness in European visual art during the 16th and 17th centuries. Particular focus is given to ambivalent social attitudes towards drinking during this period. Details on depictions of the Greek god Bacchus are presented. Topics discussed include illusionism, artist Pieter Bruegel the Elder, and Dutch and Flemish art.
