- Abstract
Objectives: Identify the etiologies of dyspnea in terminally ill patients and outline management and treatment options available for terminally-ill patients with dyspnea. Material and methods: The aim is to review the published scientific literature for studies evaluating non-pharmacological and pharmacological interventions for patients with advanced cancer in palliative care. Discussion: The data were structured in the following paragraphs: causes of dyspnea, role of multidisciplinary team in the palliative care, non-pharmacological and pharmacological strategies. Conclusions: Dyspnea is caused by multiple factors in a variety of patients with advanced cancer at the end of life. It has a large impact on the quality of life. Assessment is typically focused on the underlying causes. Non-pharmacological interventions is the first step in treating patients. Pharmacological treatment includes optimization of treatment doses and opioids for symptom-based treatment. Dyspnea is a common reason for the use of palliative sedation and we use mainly pharmacological strategies for terminally-ill patients.
