- Abstract
This article discusses how Paul Verhoeven's 1996 science fiction thriller "Starship Troopers" illustrates a certain practice in American science fiction filmmaking, which is using fascism and Nazism to transport the past into the future without any clear moral reference point. According to the author, U.S. filmmakers translate history into images that transcode cultural discourses and categories using advanced and digitally enhanced surfaces or game options. "Starship Troopers," which was loosely based on the novel by Robert Heinlein, features a futuristic military society whose values include submission to state authority and self-sacrifice for the sake of the human race.
