- Abstract
The intake of bioactive substances can effectively improve the health of people. However, some bioactive substances are difficult to be applied because of the poor solubility, stability, and bioavailability. Micro‐encapsulation is a common technology for the encapsulation, protection, and delivery of bioactive substances, and selecting a suitable encapsulation method is of great significance for improving the stability and bioavailability of bioactive substances. The various types and different properties of bioactive substances necessitate different microencapsulation methods. The recent studies about the physicochemical properties, ways of exerting efficacy, and major challenges in application of different bioactive substances were reviewed. Particularly, the selection of wall materials and the methods for microencapsulation of representative bioactive substances were discussed, with a view to providing new ideas for the design, preparation, and research of microencapsulation of bioactive substances.
