- Abstract
The present investigation was carried out to study the ecological status of phytoplankton in relation to physicochemical characteristics of water at 3 locations of different depth contours in the coastal waters of Padubidri, west coast of India for a period of 8 months from October 2014 to May 2015. A total of 26 genera of phytoplankton were recorded from the area of which 19 belongs to diatoms, 6 to dinoflagellates and 1 to blue-green algae. Among all the phytoplankton, Chaetoceros was found to be most dominant genera (45.02%) followed by Coscinodiscus (29.38%). At all the stations, the contribution of diatoms was found to be high throughout the season when compared to dinoflagellates and blue green algae. Phytoplankton population density attained its maximum (16,07,134 No./m3) during postmonsoon season (December 2014) compared to premonsoon season. The phytoplankton diversity index, species richness and Species evenness ranged from 0.443 to 2.259, 0.528 to 1.449 and 0.213 to 0.906, respectively.
