- Abstract
Studies on the press aimed at rural populations from the 19th century until World War I aim to determine and describe changes in publishing and the reading markets, from the establishment of the first journals up until the socio-political transformation. The popular press during the Russian Partition is discussed, whose first goal was to cut illiteracy in rural areas. Comparison of particular titles with regard to their content, addressees and editorial teams facilitated the determination of the functions of the popular press during the period and region defined. The activity of the press for the rural population in the period defined above varied. The journals were dominated by educational, social and religious content. The struggle to preserve Polishness during the three partitions, although different due to state administration circumstances, focused on the popularisation of knowledge of Polish history and on learning the native language.
