- Abstract
The article examines the socio-political forces that shaped the kind of literature written during transitional periods of Ethiopian history from the "era of the princes" to the downfall of Haile Selassie I. It traces the development of Amharic literature as a secular undertakings beginning with the publication of Aferworq Gebrelyyesus' "Libb Wolled Tarik" in 1908 to the works of Heruy Wolde-Selassie. It also underscores the significant impact of the works of other writers including Tsegaye Gebre Medhin and Yohannes Admassu on Ethiopian society.
