- Authors
Fabrick, Laura
- Abstract
The article discusses sustainable development in relation to the environmental law in the U.S. Sustainable development broke into global consciousness during the 1992 United National Conference on the Environment and Development or Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The Earth Summit defines sustainable development as a measure to encourage sustainable production and consumption, particularly increasing energy efficiency and the decoupling of economic growth from pressures on the environment or natural resource base. Article 1.1 of the Preamble to Agenda 21 of the Rio Conference called for the integration of environmental and developmental concerns. Lawyers are seen as ideal intermediaries into the multi-tiered system for sustainability.
